Welch Allyn transilluminator light aids Dr. Vance in the detection of tooth fractures.  This intense beam of light shines through tooth structure, stopping at a fracture line, showing a dark area on the other side of the fracture. Fractures harbor bacteria and can lead to future tooth trauma. This light confirms the diagnosis of cracked tooth syndrome which is when a patient, with no visible sign of tooth trauma, experiences pain upon biting or sensitivity to temperature.
